CASA:

What is CASA?

  • A court appointed special advocate (CASA) is a trained volunteer who is appointed by judge to represent the best interest of a child in court.
  • A CASA volunteer may be assigned to a child who is a victim of abuse and/or neglect.
  • The CASA volunteer carefully researches the background of the child and family and reports back to the court.
  • The CASA volunteer makes a placement recommendation to the judge and remains assigned to the case until it is permanently resolved.

CLASS Attorney:

What is a CLASS attorney?

  • Concerned lawyers advocating spousal safety (CLASS) is a pro bono project sponsored by the Virginia Beach Bar Association.
  • The goal of the program is to provide representation to victims of domestic violence at the hearings for protective orders.
  • Every Friday, volunteer lawyers appear in court to provide victims with such representation.
  • On the morning of the hearing, a CLASS attorney is assigned to represent the victim during that hearing only.

Other Services:

What other services does the Juvenile Court provide?

The Department processes petitions against juveniles including support, custody, visitation, and certain adoption petitions. It also screens for the placement of juveniles who are arrested and taken into custody.
